Back during the Great Depression, Post and Kellogg's owned an even split of the bulk of cereal sales. Post cut back its marketing and product development while Kellogg's moved forward with both. When the economy finally stabilized Kellogg's had already begun to take a commanding lead in sales and extended it as people had more to spend. To this day Post has not been able to catch up and is trailing by a wide margin.
